No More Fueling Around

When the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) discusses options for regulating marine emissions of greenhouse gases next week, it will make its case that a single standard is preferable to a patchwork of varying fuel requirements. Whatever plan the IMO eventually produces will join an already-crowded regime of separate marine fuel regulation that has started to become a more prominent feature in the day-to-day tanker market. As if on cue, recent developments in the Mediterranean Aframax market have provided IMO delegates with a clear example of how unevenly enforced marine fuel regulation can have a significant impact on shipping markets.
