Lloyd’s List: Tankers to Scoop up Canada’s Tar Sands Oil Exports

“Tanker owners will rub their hands in glee at the prospect of opening up a new long-haul trade route. A chunk of the global fleet’s excess tonnage, they hope, will be soaked up by tar sands shipments from Canada to Asia. . . . Shipbroker Poten & Partners agrees that the rejection of Keystone will galvanise other opportunities: “Regardless of whether President Obama’s ultimate plans are to green light the project, [the decision to reject the Keystone pipeline] might provide enough motivation to accelerate approval on alternate Canadian pipeline projects to services other markets. ‘An unintended consequence of stalling in Washington may result in Canadian oil being pushed into the arms of Far East markets.’”
