TradeWinds: US trade official’s rules for LNG ships range from ‘challenging’ to ‘impossible’, Poten says

April 30, 2025 Requirements by US trade representative Jamieson Greer covering LNG shipping will be at least “challenging” and at worst “impossible” to achieve, according to Poten & Partners. Speaking on a webinar, the consultant and broker’s senior adviser Gordon Shearer reminded participants that, under the planned requirements by April 2028 under the trade official’s decision, 1% of domestic production is to be exported on a US-flagged and operated vessel. Shearer questioned why the US had carved out special requirements for LNG, which “to put it mildly, are challenging, or, to put it more bluntly, impossible to achieve”.
