Seatrade Maritime News: US-listed owners to bear brunt of China port fee retaliation

October 11, 2025 China’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) has unveiled its response to the USTR’s fees for Chinese owned, operated and built vessels that comes into force from 14 October.

The new fees cover five categories according to brokers Poten quoting China’s MOT –

  • Vessels owned by US enterprises, organisations, or individuals

  • Vessels operated by US enterprises, organisations, or individuals

  • Vessels owned or operated by enterprises or organisations in which US enterprises, organisations, or individuals directly or indirectly hold 25% or more of the equity, voting rights, or board seats

  • Vessels flying the US flag

  • Vessels built in the US

“The number of US flagged and /or US built vessels is small and they rarely call China, so the impact on those vessel categories will be minimal,” commented Poten.
