June 27th, 2025:Ship recycling enters a new era Yesterday, on 26 June 2025, the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) officially went into effect. The aim of this piece of regulation from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is to improve the safety and environmental performance of ship recycling yards worldwide. The HKC has been a long time coming. The convention was approved by the IMO back in 2009, but it required a lengthy ratification process by member states before it met the conditions to enter into force. So, what happens next?
