TradeWinds: ‘Mad rush’: How Trump’s diesel ban could shake up tanker market

28 September 2026

A proposed ban on US diesel exports would upend the global market and boost shipping, according to Poten & Partners. Blocking exports of the fuel would eliminate above 20% of the 8m barrels per day moved daily across the globe, Poten tanker research head Erik Broekhuizen said.

It would send buyers in Europe and the rest of the Americas scrambling for diesel from India, Singapore, South Korea and maybe even China. A ban would also send refiners scrambling to export as many barrels as possible before it kicks in, he said.

“This will cause a mad rush to fix MR product tankers in the US Gulf, spiking TC14, the benchmark shipping route that tracks the cost of transporting clean petroleum products from the US Gulf to Europe,” Broekhuizen said.
