As China looks to buy, US reserves are at lows not seen since 1983 after four months of reserve releases, Poten & Partners research head Erik Broekhuizen said.
From 20 March to 9 July, the US averaged 5.9m bpd, up from a 4.2m bpd average in the first half.
Broekhuizen added that the US structured the releases as an exchange, meaning recipients have to pay back 1.2 barrels for every barrel borrowed during a period running from November 2026 to 2029.
