May 21--Bank of America is laying off 135 employees in the Richmond area effective Aug. 31.
Most of the people losing their jobs are in credit card collections, bank spokeswoman Nicole Nastacie said.
These employees work with customers who are experiencing financial hardships and may be behind in their credit card payments.
That particular function, which is located at Villa Park in Henrico County, is exiting the Richmond market and being consolidated at other locations, Nastacie said. She declined to say where those locations are.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank had the full-time equivalent of 2,900 employees as of Jan. 1 in the Richmond area in consumer, commercial and business banking as well as at Merrill Lynch and in a consumer call center.
"We are committed to assisting associates impacted by this decision, which includes offering outplacement support services," Nastacie said.
"In many cases, individuals whose roles have been impacted by a decline in one business will find a role in another business within the bank."
The bank has 60 open positions in the Richmond area, Nastacie said. The bank also recently announced 50 new technology jobs here.
On Tuesday, Pfizer Inc. said 550 jobs in the Richmond area will be lost in the next two to three years with the closing of the former Wyeth plant on Darbytown Road in eastern Henrico.
