What's Hot / What's Not

The What's Hot and What's Not section ranks stocks that have unusual price movement with respect to their historic performance. This is done by calculating the Standard Deviation which is a statistical measure of change in volatility expressed as standard deviations from the historic average, or more precisely, the variance in the latest period divided by the volatility over the past 20 periods.

The advantage of this over simply supplying a list of stocks with the greatest change on the day is that it will catch significant changes in stocks that normally trade in a non-volatile manner. As an example, it will give equal emphasis to utilities stocks and technology stocks.

As well as the standard deviation these pages also list the closing prices, daily change, percent change and the 20-day average volume price.

The price has to be between $5 and $1000, and trading for at least a month and have an average daily volume of at least 10,000 shares.
